After competing in the 2026 World Cup with the Argentine national team, Julián Álvarez took advantage of the European summer break to rest. However, his peace was short-lived: the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Thursday the opening of an investigation to analyze the situation of the forward due to the alleged harassment exerted by Barcelona during negotiations for his transfer.

In recent months, even during the World Cup, the Catalan club posted several statements on their social media suggesting they were waiting to finalize the transfer of the "Spider." This situation upset Atlético Madrid, prompting them to turn to the Spanish sports authority to defend their rights and assets.

The potential sanctions for both Julián and the Culés are significant. According to Article 93 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code, which addresses the non-compliance with federative decisions, they could face a financial fine and disqualification or suspension for a specified period.

This interruption in the Córdoba native's career could extend from one month to two years, with a minimum of four matches without playing if he manages to obtain the minimum reduction. Furthermore, if the player receives this suspension, he will have to compensate financially to Atleti because they will not be able to utilize his services.

On the other hand, Barça could face a closure, either total or partial, of up to three matches or two months from the club's facilities. Another option they might consider is a reduction of three points in the final standings of the season and prohibiting the registration of players in one or more transfer windows.

Amid the World Cup with the Argentine national team, Álvarez was asked in the mixed zone about his future, and he did not hesitate in his response. "I spoke with the people from Atlético Madrid, and I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer; I want to fulfill my dream," he stated.

When referring to his aspiration, he mentioned Barcelona. When he was still a child in the youth ranks of Club Atlético Calchín, he was asked which team he supported and responded with great ease: "I am from River, Barça, Calchín, and Argentina." So, his vision for the future is quite clear.

After Robert Lewandowski left the club to play for Chicago Fire in MLS, Hansi Flick is considering rebuilding the team for the upcoming season, and one of his weaknesses is the Argentine forward. The only problem with this situation is that Atlético Madrid refuses to negotiate directly with a competitor and will only accept selling him for the buyout clause: $500 million.

In light of this, they are exploring new options to find a world-class forward, although they have not been able to find anyone at Julián Álvarez's level. This Wednesday morning, the main competitor for the position, Junior Kroupi from Bournemouth, suffered a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his left foot and will be out for 3 to 4 months.

The search for the new forward is extensive, although they still have time until the night of August 31. While Julián is at the top of the list, his new issues with the RFEF complicate the situation, and Barcelona will take their time to decide who will be their starting forward in pursuit of the Champions League.
