Goodbye Overcoat: The New Trend in Coats Taking Over This Winter 2026
For years, wool overcoats and puffer jackets have been the main protagonists of winter. However, in 2026, a new trend emerged, gaining traction both on the runways and in street style, and it has already become the most sought-after coat of the season.
The barn jacket has established itself as one of the major trends thanks to its classic design, comfort, and versatility. Unlike other fleeting fashions, all signs indicate that it has come to stay: it pairs well with jeans, tailored trousers, dresses, midi skirts, and even sportswear, making it a practical option for everyday wear.
Although it currently occupies a central place in the fashion world, the barn jacket was born with a very different purpose. Its origin lies in workwear used by farmers and rural workers, primarily in Europe and the United States.
It was designed to withstand long hours outdoors, offering protection against wind, moisture, and low temperatures.
Most models maintain a straight and relaxed silhouette, ideal for layering over thick sweaters, hoodies, shirts, or knitwear. They also retain some details that have made them recognizable since their inception, such as the contrasting corduroy collar, large front pockets, and the front closure with snaps or a metal zipper.
Regarding materials, the more traditional versions are made from thick waxed cotton, gabardine, or durable canvas.
However, this winter has seen the emergence of more sophisticated reinterpretations in suede, leather, premium cotton, and even models with quilted interiors or shearling lining, perfect for colder days.
It can be part of a classic, minimalist, urban, or even elegant look. This ability to adapt to different styles has led both luxury brands like Prada, Miu Miu, Toteme, or The Row to incorporate it into their collections, while fast-fashion brands have launched their own versions to reach a much broader audience.
As for colors, the 2026 palette favors neutral tones that are easy to mix and match. The most popular choices are olive green, chocolate brown, beige, camel, sand, navy blue, and black. Additionally, some shades in burgundy, taupe gray, and forest green are starting to gain traction.
How to Style the Barn Jacket?
For a casual and urban style, one of the most effective combinations is to wear it with straight or wide-leg jeans, a neutral-toned wool sweater, and white sneakers or black boots. It's a comfortable option for everyday wear that maintains a neat appearance without much effort.
If the goal is to achieve a more elegant outfit, it pairs very well over straight or wide-leg tailored trousers, a fine-knit top, and loafers.
Another alternative that gained prominence this winter is mixing the barn jacket with knitted midi or maxi dresses. The contrast between a rural-inspired garment and a more feminine silhouette creates a modern and sophisticated look. To complete the outfit, knee-high leather or suede boots are an excellent choice.
Long pleated skirts have become one of the best companions for this coat. In light shades like cream or beige, they create an interesting contrast with olive green, brown, or camel jackets, achieving an elegant proposal without sacrificing comfort.
Those who prefer a more relaxed aesthetic can opt for cargo pants, oversized jeans, or barrel-style models along with turtleneck sweaters and combat boots. This combination follows the utilitarian style, ideal for very cold days.
In terms of accessories, leather or canvas tote bags, plain wool scarves, caps, belts, and vintage-inspired sunglasses are the best complements for this garment. The barn jacket also allows for more sporty combinations. With thermal leggings, an oversized hoodie, knee-high socks, and trekking shoes or boots, a comfortable and functional look is achieved.
