Members of the XRP Ledger community oppose lowering the reserve requirement, emphasizing the importance of security. VET, an XRPL validator, noted that the reserve was initially set at 1,000 XRP in 2012, functioning more as an account-creation fee. After the reserve was reduced to 200 XRP, the current system emerged, designed to protect network resources from spam and DDoS attacks. VET highlighted that the reserve remains crucial due to high storage and memory costs, especially with the rise of AI. Currently, the base reserve for an XRPL account is 1 XRP, while holding RLUSD or USDC requires a 0.2 XRP reserve. Although there was prior support for lowering the reserve due to XRP's price increase and improved server performance, VET stated that any further reduction should only occur if security can be maintained. VET dismissed claims that a 1 XRP reserve hinders user adoption, suggesting that larger issues affecting user choice should be addressed instead.
