Visa and Artemis Release AI Agent Payment Report
Visa and Artemis have jointly released a report titled "Agentic Payments from the Ground Up," which indicates that AI agent payments can be categorized into two types: the first involves agents completing macro transactions on behalf of users, such as booking tickets and subscriptions; the second involves micro transactions characterized by high-frequency, low-value API calls between software, with individual amounts typically less than one cent. On-chain data shows that since its launch in May 2025, the open protocol x402, incubated by Coinbase and Cloudflare and now hosted by the Linux Foundation, has processed approximately 109 million transactions, with an adjusted transaction volume of about $15 million, primarily active on Base, Solana, and Polygon. The Machine Payment Protocol (MPP), co-built by Stripe and Tempo with participation from Visa, went live in mid-March 2026, completing approximately 115,000 transactions within weeks, with a settlement amount of around $25,000. The report highlights that the development of AI agent payments is driving the demand for low-cost, high-frequency machine-native payment infrastructure, suggesting that stablecoins and blockchain networks may become significant components of micro-payment scenarios. The future payment system may not be solely replaced by bank cards or stablecoins, but rather a fusion of both in different contexts.
